Multiple well drained alfalfa fields on a four year rotation insures fair to good quality alfalfa bales on most years. Weeds are controlled as much as cutting and spraying will allow. See also Horse Quality Alfalfa

Currently, all future Brome Grass production is sold out.

Brome Grass is the local to the central mid-west most common cool season forage and harvest grass. Brome Grass is reliable regardless of yearly rainfall making it a dependable forage. It is a sod forming grass of a fine leaf readily eaten by horse and split hoof livestock. Brome Grass is self spreading, pioneering, to the exclusion of all other weeds and most woody growth making it one of the pure hay fields.

Brome Grass compacts into heavy bales compared to the same outside dimension of a 50 pound alfalfa bale at 14x18x36, a Brome Grass bale of the same outside dimension weighs more than alfalfa bales, typically 65 to 75 pounds.

Pricing of Brome Grass bales is the same cost per nutrient value point as alfalfa. This insures the buyer is actually buying the same level of digestible fiber and protein per cost of nutrient point rather than by weight or bale size regardless of nutrient value. This typically results in a Brome Grass bale valued within a range of $4.00 - $6.00 per bale when alfalfa bales are running $7.00. The end result is that whether buying alfalfa or Brome Grass the cost relative to nutrient value is the same. The distinction between alfalfa and brome is that brome by weight provides more fiber, less protein making it well suited for the less active horse.

Alfalfa and grass bale production is taken with precaution against dust, mildew, mold and blister beatle.

Alfalfa is harvested at or just before 10% bloom and grass prior to boot stage to maximize nutrient value and field longevity insuring the repeat buyer a more predictable years out supply of forage. The minimal bloom further decreases the likelihood of blister beatle. Grass and alfalfa raked when required. All are tested with an electronic moisture meter at 19% or less before baling. Bales are picked up and barn stored the day baled.
